Why the need for booze?

The latest idea to “revitalise” the Australian Golf Open (“Respect my authority, McNamee tells potential rowdies”, Sydney Morning Herald, December 11) is just an excuse to make more money from alcohol. The same scenario applies to all sports events and concerts these days.At a recent Beach Boys concert it was hard to enjoy the performance due to the steady steam of people walking past to buy alcohol. At Deep Purple, my wife and I were covered in beer from the boofheads behind us.This never used to happen. I can recall attending Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath concerts in the 1970s, when there was no alcohol served. The music was all that mattered.I like a beer and wine as much as anyone, but the presence of alcohol at virtually every public activity just reinforces our image as a nation of drunken yobbos.
